Editorial Standards
Purpose of the catalogue
The HOVUI Public Domain Literature Library exists to provide readers with editorial commentary on public-domain works. Each book page includes a catalogue note that examines narrative technique, historical context, and thematic patterns. The library does not host full texts but offers reading companions that highlight aspects worthy of attention.
Scope and selection
The catalogue currently contains 99 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selections were made to represent a range of genres, periods, and authors, with an emphasis on works that have received less modern editorial attention. The collection is not exhaustive; it reflects the editor's interests in historical fiction, fantasy, early science fiction, and romance.
Source attribution
Every book record includes the original publisher—Project Gutenberg—as supplied in the source data. The catalogue does not alter or verify the bibliographic information but presents it as received. Readers are encouraged to consult the original Project Gutenberg files for complete texts and metadata.
Bibliographic records
Each record contains the following fields: title, author, publisher, keywords, target-reader description, and catalogue note. The keywords are drawn from the source metadata and may reflect Library of Congress subject headings. The target-reader field indicates the intended audience as provided by the source.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories: A Guide to World Events in Context, Exploring Fantasy Realms & Folklore, Speculative Futures, and Exploring Romance & Domestic Life. These categories are navigation aids, not definitive literary judgments. Some books could reasonably belong to more than one category; the placement reflects the primary emphasis of the editorial note.
Editorial reading context
The catalogue notes are written by F. Scott Conrad, Associate Editor. They are based on reading excerpts from each work, not necessarily the full text.
